How to Start a Bullet Journal Easily
I myself have been bullet journaling in some form most of my adult life. I always had a notebook and pen with me and was documenting all my thoughts, plans and todos. Back then there just wasn’t a definition for it yet. So you just were taking notes, now you are bullet journaling.
So when I stumbled about bullet journaling at the beginning of 2016 I was super excited about sharing my love for pen and paper planning with fellow enthusiasts. Thanks, Ryder for giving it a name!
Having always used a notebook as well as having been a game artist, the switch came very naturally to me. But the longer I shared my layouts and especially when I started my blog I soon realized that getting started can be really tough if you are completely and utterly new to the topic.
For one, there is the scary empty first page of your freshly bought notebook or binder. Secondly, there is the overwhelming amount of layouts you can find online. Even if you only look at weekly layouts you get crushed by a wave of thousands of different designs. All which seem to make sense for the person using it. So where the heck do you start?

Before you run to the store and stock up on all the cute bullet journaling supplies I want you to give the system a try first. I know it’s exciting to get a super pretty notebook and all the amazing pens and watercolors you hear people raving about.
But please think about it this way: You are just starting. You don’t have any clue yet what exactly you want to do and how to do it. So if you start spending money before you have figured it out you most certainly will be disappointed. You won’t believe how many messages I receive every single month of readers being
- overwhelmed,
- scared,
- feeling like they never are good enough,
- not being artistic enough,
- …
Don’t make the same mistake!
Instead, start with learning the basic skills first. And if bullet journaling is something that works for you and helps you to be more

Then go and get yourself a beautiful notebook/binder you love opening up every day and filling to the very brim.
This also will save you extra money, since you get a feel for what pens work on what kind of paper and which notebooks allow for watercolors and such without destroying it in the process.
‘Ok, Sandra I got it! Start small, work your way up. Can we please get started now?’
